WEBDREAMER

Submission Guidelines

In his book THE ART OF FICTION (First Vintage Books Edition 1985), John Gardner said, "If we carefully inspect our experience as we read, we discover that the importance of physical detail is that it creates for us a kind of dream, a rich vivid play in the mind. We read a few words at the beginning of the book or the particular story, and suddenly we find ourselves seeing not words on a page but a train moving through Russia, an old Italian crying, or a farmhouse battered by rain. We read on--dream on--not passively but actively, worrying about the choices the characters have to make, listening in panic for some sound behind the fictional door, exulting in characters' successes, bemoaning their failures. In great fiction, the dream engages us heart and soul; we not only respond to imaginary things--sights, sounds, smells--as though they were real, we respond to fictional problems as though they were real: We sympathize, think, and judge...."

WEBDREAMER is all about the fictional dream. It is also about providing a unique forum for talent to emerge. Because weavers of dreams must survive in reality and should be paid for their work, we have chosen to adopt a commercial format in which costs are defrayed by advertisements. We feel it also our responsibility to make even the advertisements in keeping with the quality of our publication.

Other features we are developing include: focused chat groups; a directory of fan and writer conventions; a directory of fiction and poetry markets with emphasis on small, special interest, and regional magazines. Editors and convention directors, contact us via e-mail (preferred) or snail mail with information you wish included.

Fiction

Our primary emphasis is on quality fiction. We are open to all genres and forms--traditional and experimental--as long as the story needs are met and the fictional dream is intact. We are not interested in fads, pornography, or vulgar language merely for shock value. Appropriate illustrations and photos are always welcome as long as they meet the requirements for art noted below. Excerpts from novels MUST stand alone and meet length requirements of short stories. Serialized novels may be in our future, but we will rely on reader input for a later decision. Please, no full novel submissions at this time.

     Preferred average length 3,000 words
          $10 500 to 1,000 words
          $20 1,001 to 2,500 words
          $30 2,500 plus words

Poetry

Good poetry is always intimate and focused. We prefer a maximum of 30 lines, but can be convinced to publish even long narrative forms if it is good enough. Please submit each poem on a separate page and a maximum of five poems per submission. We'll ask for more if your work excites us. The trend today is away from rhyming, so if you submit it, it must be exceptional to catch our interest.

          $10 Flat rate per poem
          Negotiable Long poems

Non-Fiction

The non-fiction articles we publish, too, must make the same intimate connection with our readers that is accomplished by the fictional dream. The writing must reflect the personality of the author. We are interested in single publication pieces, columns and on-going series. Humor is always welcome. We have special interest in articles on anything within a day trip of Las Vegas, but are open to any subject. Convince us with an article too good to turn down.
