Algis Budrys Speaks. . .

Besides being a multiple Nebula and Hugo-nominated science fiction writer, I have also been an editor for many years, mostly in non-science fiction fields. Stops along the way have included Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Playboy Press, and Woodall's Trailer Travel and other magazines published by the Woodall Publishing Company. And I've worked on a fair parcel of magazines in the field, as well. But now I'm the editor and publisher of my own Tomorrow Speculative Fiction Magazine, which is in its fourth year, with #20 on sale now. (It's five dollars for a single issue, $23 for a six-issue subscription in the United States, $29 outside, both from the Unifont Company, whose address you find on the next page. By the way, all purchases are shipped postpaid.) Here's what it looks like:

But that's as may be. What I'm really calling your attention to is my book on writing. Writing to the Point, and my audio cassette, 84.2 Minutes of Algis Budrys. The writing book is a no-nonsense, 64-page softcover volume, consisting of everything I've learned in 44 years of editing, minus everything that's superfluous and confusing. It's stripped of extensive discussions of tense, case, and cetera, which I think are a lot of use to critics but of no earthly use to a writer. It simply tells you how to sell, in simple steps. And it will work.

And, my audio cassette is interesting because I put up, instead of shutting up. I read four of my stories, from over the years--including one from Tomorrow--and if you don't like them, there's very little more I can say. But I secretly think you will like them, in which case there's nothing much more I need to say.

I think I write some of the best SF in the world. I edit the same way. Some of my writers are former students of mine at various writing workshops. Some are not. In any case, I put together a magazine which constantly draws attention--it's been nominated for a Hugo in every year of eligibility--and, pardon my saying so, considerable other forms of praise.

So, that's it. I think you will enjoy my products, and profit by them.
